TPM and 5S

TPM and 5S

The traditional approach to TPM was developed in the 1960s and consists of 5S as a foundation and eight supporting activities (sometimes referred to as pillars).

The goal of 5S is to create a work environment that is clean and well-organized. It consists of five elements:

  • Sort (Seiri): Separating of the essential from the nonessential items. i.e. eliminate anything that is not truly needed in the work area
  • Straighten (Seiton): Organizing the essential materials where everything has its place
  • Shine (Seiso): Cleaning and inspecting the work area
  • Standardize (Seiketsu): Establish system and standards for performing the above three activities and make them a habit
  • Sustain (Shitsuke): Ensure the standards are regularly applied, and maintain a safe and sanitary work environment (Safety)
